- Providing legal interpretation and advice on matters affecting governance, contracts, and intergovernmental relationships.

- Assisting with policy development and internal governance frameworks to ensure they are legally sound and respectful of Indigenous rights and Treaty obligations.

2. Contracts & Agreements

- Reviewing and drafting agreements involving the Tribal Council and external partners (e.g., funding agreements, service contracts, and leases).

- Ensuring contracts protect the interests of the Council and its member Nations, providing clarity on responsibilities and legal obligations.

- Translating legal and regulatory frameworks into culturally relevant, practical advice for community leaders and administrators.

- Drafting all employment contracts with HR.

3. Legal Support for Member First Nations

- Providing legal support or referrals to member First Nations when dealing with external governments or organizations on legal and regulatory issues.

- Translating legal and regulatory frameworks into culturally relevant, practical advice for community leaders and administrators.

4. Environmental and Regulatory Law

Because YTC combines legal services with environmental work, this function supports compliance with environmental regulations and protection matters. This includes advising on environmental assessment processes, land-use issues, and regulatory impacts on First Nation territories.

5. Organizational Risk & Governance Support

- Guiding internal governance practices, risk assessment, and compliance with laws relevant to operating a Tribal Council.

- Assisting senior leadership (CEO, Chiefs) by providing legal context for strategic decisions.

6. Liaison & External Coordination

- Acting as a point of contact with external legal systems, regulators, and allied organizations when the Council or communities interact with government or legal institutions.

In-house legal at Yellowhead Tribal Council is about proactive legal and policy support that enables the Tribal Council to govern effectively, protect community interests, support lawful contracts and agreements, and ensure programs and services operate within appropriate legal frameworks.
