Program Overview

YTC Fire & Safety Training is designed for learners who want to build practical emergency response skills and contribute to the safety of their communities. Course offerings include wildland firefighting, structural firefighting, and hazardous materials awareness and operations.

1. Wildland Firefighter I 

Certification awarded: Wildland Firefighter I Certification (NFPA 1140, 2022) 
Level: Entry level 
Delivery method: Blended learning: online and practical 
Duration: Approximately 92-96 hours: 64 hours online, 24 hours practical, 4-8 hours evaluation Fee: $945 total: $150 application fee and $795 tuition 
Prerequisites: Minimum age 18, or parental consent if approved by YTC; legal right to work in Canada; Standard First Aid/CPR C; physical fitness requirements; English proficiency

Learners will focus on 

  • Wildfire behavior and ecology 
  • Suppression tactics using hand tools, pumps, and hoses 
  • Crew safety, situational awareness, and risk management 
  • Incident command, field readiness, and coordinated emergency response 
  • Fire Smart principles and land stewardship practices

Required / recommended materials 

  • IFSTA Ground Cover Firefighting for Structural Firefighters, 1st Edition 
  • CSA-approved steel-toed boots with 6-inch uppers or taller 
  • Notebook and writing instruments 

Evaluation 

Written examination, practical skills evaluation, and third-party certification testing. Minimum 70% on the written examination and successful completion of the practical skills evaluation. 


2. NFPA 1010 Firefighter I 

Certification: Firefighter I Certification (NFPA 1010, 2024) 
Level: Entry level 
Reference: NFPA 1010 (2024) Standard; IFSTA Essentials of Firefighting, 8th Edition 
Duration: 132 hours: 40 hours classroom/online and 92 hours practical 
Delivery method: Blended learning: classroom/online and practical 
Prerequisites: None specified

Learners will focus on 

  • Personal protective equipment and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) 
  • Fire dynamics, building construction, and fire behavior indicators 
  • Fireground communications and Incident Command System (ICS) teamwork 
  • Ladders, ropes, knots, forcible entry, ventilation, and hose operations 
  • Search and rescue, fire suppression, salvage, overhaul, and evidence preservation 

Required / recommended materials 

  • IFSTA Essentials of Firefighting, 8th Edition 
  • NFPA-compliant structural firefighting ensemble and SCBA
  • Notebook and pen 

Evaluation 

Online quizzes, practical skill evaluations, final written exam, and live fire evaluation. Passing criteria: 80% or higher on quizzes and the final exam, plus successful completion of practical skill evaluations and full participation in live-fire exercises. 


3. NFPA 1010 Firefighter 2

Certification: Firefighter 2 Certification (NFPA 1010) 

This advanced course will build on Firefighter I. Duration, schedule, fees, and full course details will be confirmed and added before this course is opened for enrollment. 


4. NFPA 470 Hazardous Materials Awareness 

Certification / level: NFPA 470 Hazardous Materials Awareness Level 
Duration: 10 hours 
Delivery: Blended learning: online modules and in-person/classroom scenario application Prerequisites: None specified

Learners will focus on 

  • Recognizing and identifying hazardous materials using indicators, placards, labels, and shipping papers
  • Using the Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG) and Safety Data Sheets (SDS) 
  • Assessing scene hazards and implementing initial safety actions 
  • Establishing hot, warm, and cold zones 
  • Case studies and scenario-based learning 

Required / recommended materials 

  • IFSTA Hazardous Materials for First Responders, 6th Edition 
  • NFPA 470: Hazardous Materials Awareness Level 
  • Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG) 
  • Notebook, pen/pencil, course handouts and worksheets 

Evaluation 

Written exams, scenario evaluations, and class participation. Students must complete required scenarios and score at least 70% overall on written exams.


5. Hazardous Materials Operations 

Certification / level: Hazardous Materials Operations Level 
Reference: NFPA 470 operational guidelines 
Duration: 32 hours 
Delivery: Blended learning: online modules, classroom, and hands-on skills training 
Prerequisites: Hazardous Materials Awareness recommended

Learners will focus on 

  • Identifying potential hazards and container behaviors 
  • Planning the initial response and implementing defensive actions
  • Using personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety protocols 
  • Emergency, product, mass, and technical decontamination 
  • Victim rescue and recovery, evidence preservation, and public safety 

Required / recommended materials 

  • IFSTA Hazardous Materials for First Responders, 6th Edition 
  • NFPA 470 operational guidelines and NFPA 472 
  • Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG) 
  • Notebook, pen/pencil, course handouts and worksheets 
  • Full PPE for practical exercises, including chemical protective clothing and respiratory protection 

 Evaluation 

Written exams, practical scenario evaluations, and class participation. Students must pass all practical evaluations and score at least 70% overall to receive a passing grade.

Requirements vary by course. The following should be confirmed per course before final posting:

Fees 

Wildland Firefighter I: $945 total, including a $150 application fee and $795 tuition. 

Fees for NFPA 1010 Firefighter I, NFPA 470 Hazardous Materials Awareness, and Hazardous Materials Operations should be listed as TBA unless YTC confirms separate pricing before posting. Firefighter 2 pricing will be set when that course is finalized.
