The Alexander First Nation (AFN) is a Cree First Nation community located 40 miles northwest of the city of Edmonton, Alberta. The AFN governs and administers an effective management operating structure that is community-based and is guided by qualified operational policies to ensure consistency with applicable laws and regulations. Within the AFN’s management structure, the AFN is currently seeking a self-motivated individual to fulfill the full-time position of a Payroll/Accounts Payable Clerk (PAC). The position will contribute to the ongoing development of effective financial systems and controls that enhance the financial management structure for the AFN.

The Payroll/Accounts Payable Clerk (PAC), under the direction of the Finance Controller, is responsible for coordinating, monitoring, and implementing the administrative payroll systems. The PAC is also responsible for providing financial management controls and accounting duties for the AFN and its programs in accordance with the AFN Financial Management Policies and the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

Duties and Responsibilities:

This is a full-time professional position requiring the PAC to deliver the following duties and responsibilities in a manner that is consistent with and cognizant of the Alexander First Nation Financial Controls and GAAP.


  • Prepare computer input forms, enter data into computer files, compute wages and deductions, and post to payroll records.
  • Record changes affecting net wages, such as exemptions, insurance coverage, and loan payments for each employee to update master payroll records.
  • Review wages computed and correct errors to ensure accuracy of payroll.
  • Issue statements of earnings and deductions.
  • Reconcile employee deductions. 

Employment Requirements & Qualifications:

  • University degree and/or college diploma, Certificate in Finance (General Accounting)
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting practices and principles (GAAP)
  • Knowledge of auditing practices and principles
  • Knowledge of applicable laws, codes, and regulations
  • Knowledge and experience of accounting computer applications
  • Minimum of five (5) years' experience in the management of financial accounting systems data analysis, auditing, and taxation
  • Computer skills and knowledge of ACCPAC software packages
  • Knowledge of First Nations financial administration and management 
  • Knowledge of employment law and applicable legislation

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
