Cultural Services Advisor 

Yellowhead Tribal College

The position of Cultural Services Advisor is critical to YTC’s continued commitment to ensure that Indigenous worldview, knowledge, and approaches to wholeness are honoured in an education setting. 

Under the direction of the President, the Indigenous Languages Program Coordinator, and the Dean of Social Work, the Cultural Services Advisor works with the Elders Advisory (AKA Elders in Residence) to provide guidance based on a holistic Indigenous knowledge-sharing model for Indigenous students and staff at the YTC campus. The position significantly focuses on supporting Indigenous student wellness, cultural knowledge sharing, student success, and community Elder relations, building toward a sustainable support services network for all YTC students. The incumbent will provide guidance and personal consultation from an Indigenous lens for students and staff. Work collaboratively with YTC staff, provide direction, share knowledge, and mentor in language, ceremony, and culture.


Responsibilities:
  1. Work collaboratively with the Elders Advisory to meet Project and Program deliverables. 
  2. Facilitate Elders in Residence to provide Indigenous-based guidance to YTC students, Programs, and staff. 
  3. Teach and provide culturally-based support, advice, and assistance for Faculty, Staff, student Groups, and relevant committees to ensure student personal and academic success.
  4. Teach in land-based classes as needed.
  5. Provides language translation services and curriculum development.
  6. Ensure all College meetings and gatherings reflect cultural practices to guide discussions and decisions.
  7. Be available as the cultural lead for cultural and ceremonial activities and events.
  8. Train College partners on cultural practices, teachings, and ceremonies as needed.
  9. Collaborate with internal and external agencies to provide quality cultural services and to promote College programs.
  10. Prepare and deliver a detailed work plan of activities and reports  
  11. Other duties as required.


Education and Experience required:
  1. Three years of experience teaching and sharing Indigenous Cultural Knowledge, either through workshops, classrooms, or in community services provision, including three years of directly related professional counselling experience.
  2. Extensive Indigenous community development or partnership-building experience.
  3. Strong knowledge of Indigenous knowledge sharing protocols.
  4. Demonstrated knowledge of Indigenous history, language, and culture.
  5. Ability to coordinate and organize effective project planning.
  6. Excellent cross-cultural communication skills (verbal and written).
  7. Ability to foster unity and communicate effectively with various people.
  8. Possess computer skills in Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel.
  9. Proven judgment and discretion in dealing with confidential and sensitive matters.
  10. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in diverse team environments.
  11. Must respect the Elders Advisory Terms of Reference and traditional law.
  12. Must have access to reliable transportation and possess a valid driver’s license.
