The Director of Education is responsible for the overall management, guidance, and direction of the Alexis Education system, including elementary school programming, secondary school programming, off-reserve programming, and cyber-school programming. The Director of Education is responsible for ensuring that the goals, objectives, mission, and mandate of the Alexis Educational Authority are thoroughly achieved in accordance with the Chief and Council of Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation.

General duties:

  • Improve the learning experience across the spectrum of educational programs, ensuring consistency with Stoney First Nation guidelines and any mandated and professional standards.
  • Develop and maintain positive and effective relations with off-reserve schools, colleges, universities, and recognized training institutes.
  • Provide leadership to promote clear, consistent expectations that focus on successful outcomes for all students under the authority of Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation.
  • Provide direction and leadership in developing innovative and effective educational programs.
  • Ensures that the fiscal management is in accordance with the Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) funding model and other applicable grant policies or provincial regulations.
  • Submit annual and quarterly budget reviews to the Alexis Educational Authority and INAC.
  • Prepare, in cooperation with staff, the work plans and schedules to establish priorities for the operation of the education system, including the nutrition program, library, elementary school, secondary school, and Cyber School.
  • Direct the design, adaptation, and enhancement of curriculum to reflect Indigenous culture and to meet the defined needs of the Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation in cooperation with school leaders.
  • Establish and maintain positive working relations with the Alexis First Nation Chief and Council.
  • Provide direct guidance to parents and students when required.
  • Ensure that new initiatives are actively sought out for the Education Department.
  • Ensure that all educational funding opportunities are recognized and understood, and that appropriate proposals are created, submitted, and fully acted on.
  • Monitor funding envelopes that support capital facilities and transportation systems under the umbrella of Education.

Applicants should possess the following education and experience:
  • Graduate degree in Education, Human Resource Services, Business, or Public Administration
  • Five to seven years senior administrative experience (preferred)
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff, community agencies, Elders, and external stakeholders
  • Superior organizational ability and sound negotiation skills
  • Ability to work well with youth, adults, and First Nation communities
  • Clear Criminal Reference Check (CPIC) and Social Services Report
  • Inclination to be respectful of Indigenous traditions, knowledge, and customs



This is a permanent, full-time position. A timeline with appropriate metrics will be established in accordance with the goals of the Alexis Educational Authority.

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
