Position Title: Language Instructor/Curriculum Developer
Department: Indigenous Language Revitalization Department (ILRD)
Report To: Department Head of ILRD
Brief Overview
Yellowhead Tribal College (YTC) is seeking a strong team player, committed to quality service to help support the objectives of the Indigenous Language Revitalization Department (ILRD). This position will provide a range of services as a Language Instructor and a Curriculum Developer for Culture and Language. This position reports to the Head of the Indigenous Language Revitalization Department.
Language Instructor – Summary of Duties
Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
As a Language Instructor, you will help facilitate language-related courses during the Fall, Winter, and Spring terms. You will also be responsible for:
- Submit course outline to the Department Head each term;
- Maintain daily attendance records for submission into the Orbund student database;
- Submit periodic progress reports as requested by the Head of ILRD;
- Maintain our in-person course delivery model, which may however include also providing online instruction for approved students who are greater than 100km away;
- Reviewing and submitting grades for course assignments, midterm, and final grades;
- Teach curriculum in accordance with YTC & Alberta Education standards and policies;
- Establish weekly office hours for students seeking extra assistance;
- Treat students and staff with timely attention, courtesy, and respect; and
- Conform to the highest standard of professional ethics, displaying a professional attitude at all times.
Curriculum Developer – Summary of Duties
Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
As a Curriculum Developer, you will design, evaluate, and revise Indigenous language course outlines and instructional materials to improve learning outcomes. You will also collaborate with community language experts, the ILRD Department Head and/or Elders to ensure our Indigenous content aligns with today’s standards. You will also be responsible for:
- Work with the ILRD team to develop language resources and/or course outlines;
- Create educational curricula, lesson plans, storyboards, and materials for various learning modes (online, blended, in-person);
- Analyze learning needs to define educational objectives and strategies;
- In collaboration with ILRD team, work with subject matter experts (SMEs), teachers, and students to create engaging content;
- For evaluation purposes and to improve curriculum effectiveness, research and analyze student performance data, test scores, and feedback to refine and improve language learning;
- The ability and skill to develop multimedia resources and incorporate technology into the classroom, such as videos and interactive tools;
- Train and support language instructors and college staff on new curriculum content and teaching methods;
- Follow protocols set forth by Yellowhead Tribal College and member Nations; and
- Be aware of and respectful of YTC First Nations cultures and values.
Requirements
- Master’s Degree in Education and/or Indigenous Languages;
- Three to five years in instructional design and experience in teaching language courses in a post-secondary institution;
- Fluent in at least one of the three languages (nêhiyawêwin, Isga, and Nahkawiyiniwak) with the capability to assist in the other two languages’ course development;
- Extensive knowledge of Indigenous cultures and languages;
- Excellent communication and human relations skills in the workplace;
- Strong knowledge of pedagogical principles, strong communication skills, proficiency in instructional design software, and ability to use data for decision-making; and
- Demonstrated technical proficiency in standard office software applications, database systems, and the Alberta Council on Admissions and Transfer (ACAT) platform.
Hours of work
- Full-time, Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm
- Additional or offset hours may be requested. Time in Lieu will be negotiated.
