Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide clients with access to professional mental health treatment as may be required on an early intervention, short term basis, to address at-risk, crisis situations.
- Services are to be provided in a culturally appropriate manner and in conjunction with existing community support services.
- Services are to be provided with the protocols and implementations of the Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation, Alexis Health Services, and FNIHB, such as:
- Prioritizing service delivery;
- Prioritizing suicide prevention and intervention utilizing clinical protocols;
- Confirm the client is eligible for benefit coverage under NIHB or IRS RHSP and obtaining prior approval before initiating counselling;
- Ensure that the client understands the terms, conditions, and limitations of the applicable program prior to starting counselling;
- Complete a client assessment and discuss the recommended counselling and sessions schedule with the client;
- Link clients with collateral supports;
- Complete a treatment plan to be kept on the client's file including an aftercare plan. The aftercare plan should provide linkages for the individual to the community based mental health services or culturally appropriate services during and/or after the counselling.
- Keep records of appointments for each client (including date, time, place, and duration) and client confirmation of attendance for audit purposes;
- Cooperate with all Health Canada audit activities based on generally accepted industry standards, and grant access to location and documentation required to determine compliance with the programs policies outlined in the guide;
- Comply with professional regulatory body requirements for security, police record checks, and client files management;
- Not represent himself/herself as an agent or representative of Health Canada in respect of any counselling services provided to Health Canada clients;
- Continue to enhance their knowledge of the Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation, other First Nations and Inuit cultures to better serve clients and as part of their ongoing professional development. This can include opportunities provided by their professional associations, through First Nations or Inuit communities or organizations, or other related training.
Employment Requirements & Qualifications:
- Enjoy helping people, synthesizing information, developing innovative solutions to problems and be open to learning and understanding more about the history, issues, health determinants, culture, traditions, and practices of First Nations people;
- Mental Health Counselling providers must be registered with a legislated professional regulatory body and eligible for independent practice in Alberta. Eligible mental health providers include: Psychologists and Social Workers, with clinical counselling orientation, or Mental Health Counsellors with education and training comparable to Psychologists or Social Workers.
- Complete and submit a Mental Health Counsellor Provider Agreement Form to the Health Canada regional office in Edmonton, Alberta before providing services;
- Possess a clear understanding of the Privacy Act.
- Possess a genuine interest in helping others, emotional maturity and stability, flexibility, dependability, and punctuality
- Possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills and abilities and a willingness to keep learning innovative approaches;
- Possess a valid driver's license and viable vehicle as travelling to the community is mandatory;
- Complete a Criminal Record Check and a Vulnerable Sector Check.
Hours of Work: Monday to Friday/two (2) days per week 8:30 am - 4:30 pm (may be required to support with additional time/days during times of crisis and/or extreme trauma).
