The Yellowhead Tribal Council's Child and Family Services program is seeking 1 full-time and 3 part-time researchers for a project that aims to reduce the number of children entering the care of Alberta Children's Services. 

The Yellowhead Tribal Council is seeking researchers for a project designed to ensure the highest quality of programs and services for its member nations. Three of the YTC member nations (Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation, Alexander First Nation, and Sunchild First Nation) have begun a project focusing on restoring balance in their communities and reducing the number of children entering the care of Alberta Children's Services. 

With the full participation of each Nation, community dialogues will be initiated, whereby each Nation will define its needs; with the input of Elders, youth, and community members, a plan to restore balance within the communities will be developed. A pilot consisting of those services and strategies will be developed and implemented over the course of the next three years. The Nations again will have direct input into how effective the strategies and services are, and will recommend changes as each Nation grows and develops.
Qualifications:
  • Diploma or degree in Social Work or a related field (equivalencies may be considered)
  • Knowledge of and experience working with trauma
  • Working knowledge of the Yellowhead Tribal Council and participating Nations
  • Membership/registration in relevant professional associations
  • Demonstrated record of incorporating Indigenous worldviews into your practice with Indigenous children and families on and/or off reserve
  • Strong group/interview facilitation skills
  • Knowledge of and experience with OCAP principles and Indigenous research methodologies
  • Proven experience working successfully within high-paced, stressful, and/or crisis conditions
  • Ability to climb three (3) flights of stairs and the manual dexterity to use desktop computers and peripherals
Summary of duties:
  • Researchers will serve as community engagement facilitators who will engage with the three participating Nations through community circle processes, individual meetings, and questionnaires.
  • Researchers will use Indigenous research methodologies to conduct research for the project.
Other duties:
  • Assisting with the completion of a literature review
  • Gathering and analyzing data
  • Developing and executing action plans resulting from the gathered data
  • Providing evaluation and outcome support
  • Assisting in completing documents for publication
Working conditions:
  • Typically, working hours are 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday, although some evening and weekend work will be required
  • Travel to and from the three participating Nations 
  • Minimal supervision while off-site
Other important information:
  • Members of the three Nations identified are strongly encouraged to apply for a research position, even if they do not meet all of the qualifications. 
  • Candidates will need to provide security clearances. Equivalencies and the approval of an unclear record may be discussed at an initial interview.
