Yellowhead Tribal College, located on Treaty 6 territory in Edmonton, Alberta, is looking to fill the position of Social Work Department Head. Under the direction of the Dean of Academic Affairs, the Department Head is responsible for the daily operation of the Social Work department programs, students, and faculty. Lead responsibilities are classified as professional duties requiring leadership and mentoring of faculty, administrative expertise to include vision, long-term and short-term planning, decision-making, and coordination of instruction. The Department Head will assist to hire faculty, evaluate instruction, oversee curricula and ensure the programs are accredited. The Department Head will teach at least one course during the academic year unless otherwise exempted by the Dean. Start date: October 24, 2019.
Qualifications:
Two years post-secondary teaching and three years administrative experience
Registered Social Worker (RSW) with a Master's degree in Social Work or a related field
Knowledge of Indigenous cultures and languages
Excellent communication and human relations skills for creating and supporting workplace safety for staff and students
Demonstrated proficiency using standard office software applications, database, ACAT
Summary of duties:
Provide leadership and oversight to all matters related to curricula delivery, programs, planning, new course development, program review, marketing of the programs, teaching, service, and professional development of faculty
Assist with the preparation of each semester's schedule
Prepare and assist with program and course assessment
Counsel students for program entry
Supervise student recruitment, admissions, practicum, and retention policies and activities
Respond to student concerns, and resolve those concerns
Maintain an open and responsive communication policy with students
Promote student success through actively monitoring high-risk students, and where appropriate refer students to Student Services
Participate in the student appeal process in consultation with the Dean
Encourage a collegial and positive department/program environment that promotes excellence in teaching, research, and service
Lead and assist with accreditation and program reviews
Uphold the unique cultural standards of Yellowhead Tribal College in all activities
Generate reports, including the annual report and data requests
Represent the interests of the department to audiences both inside and outside the College
