The Native Education/Student Retention Coach will be responsible for overseeing the retention of our students in our four K-12 schools: Kipohtakaw School (Alexander First Nation), Alexis Nakota Sioux School (Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation), Ne Sa Soh Is Koh Dan (O'Chiese First Nation), and Sunchild School (Sunchild First Nation). The incumbent will provide advice, training, and assistance to our school teachers regarding the implementation of Treaty Six curriculum. Possessing an understanding of Treaty from the Native perspective is an asset; the Native perspective is an understanding of the Treaty as taught by our knowledge keepers through oral tradition. 

In addition to the development of Treaty Six curriculum, the position also includes the following Student Retention Coach duties:

  • Develop the leadership skills of high school students. In collaboration with the students, the Coach will deliver a high school conference by meeting with students three times throughout the year.
  • Meet with each secondary school and gather information on students' views of school and retention.
  • Additional duties to ensure the implementation of the FNSSP project, including survey report writing and working with Knowledge Keepers to develop courses.
In addition to exhibiting optimism, the Coach must be able to communicate effectively with students and teachers, listening to individual needs, offering ideas, and making suggestions for retention and graduation. Knowledge of the Cree, Stoney, and/or Ojibway cultures is also an asset.  

 

Applicants should possess the following education and experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Education or equivalent, valid Alberta Teaching certificate or eligibility
  • Specialized knowledge in Native education in the area of Treaty perspectives to develop courses to be used in our schools
  • Applicant should be task-oriented, self-motivated, and energetic, and possess strong teamwork skills 
  • Familiarity with First Nations customs, practices, and values
  • Minimum of five (5) years successful K-12 classroom teaching experience and/or professional experience in or with Cree, Stoney, or Ojibway communities
Working conditions:

Extensive travel to the member First Nation communities as required and/or requested.

Work schedule is dictated by the YTC FNSSP Manager in accordance with project funding and agreement compliance.


Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
